New anti-counterfeit technique packs two light-reactive images into one material

Science Daily - 30/05/2024
Growing concern about data theft and counterfeiting has inspired increasingly sophisticated security technologies, like hologram seals, that can help verify the authenticity of currency, passports and other important documents. However, as security technologies evolve, so do the techniques criminals use to get past them. To stay one step ahead of these bad actors, researchers report that they have developed a new photopatterning technique that creates two light-reactive images on one material.

Cause of heart failure may differ for women and men

Science Daily - 30/05/2024
A mouse study of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) found male-female differences at the cellular level. The findings could have implications for how HFpEF is treated in women compared to men.

IISc researchers develop novel method for mass production of recombinant proteins

The Hindu:Science - 30/05/2024
Recombinant proteins, such as vaccine antigens, insulin and monoclonal antibodies, are mass-produced by growing modified bacterial, viral or mammalian cells in large bioreactors

Sci-Five | The Hindu Science Quiz: On the third eyelid

This week’s sci-five quiz is on the third eyelid

Study reveals how new species evolve without geographic barriers

The Hindu:Science - 30/05/2024
Researchers at IIT Bombay discover the role of environmental resources, genes and mating in species in the development of new species in the same area, challenging the traditional view that new species can develop only in distinct geographies.

Antibiotic pollution disrupts the gut microbiome and blocks memory in aquatic snails

Science Daily - 30/05/2024
Antibiotics prevent snails from forming new memories by disrupting their gut microbiome -- the community of beneficial bacteria found in their guts.

New light-based tool could cut cost of spotting viral infections

The Hindu:Science - 30/05/2024
A viral infection can stress cells and change their shapes and sizes. Researchers have built a tool to detect these changes.

Researchers expose new symbiosis origin theories, identify experimental systems for plant life

Science Daily - 30/05/2024
Research work on symbiosis -- a mutually beneficial relationship between living organisms -- is pushing back against the newer theory of a 'single-origin' of root nodule symbiosis (RNS) -- that all symbiosis between plant root nodules and nitrogen-fixing bacteria stems from one point--instead suggesting a 'multiple-origin' theory of sybiosis which opens a better understanding for genetically engineering crops.
